June 8th is World Ocean Day, to raise awareness about the “impact of human actions on the ocean”, like garbage and sewage disposal and oil leaks. You can learn more about the importance of our oceans here: [ Ссылка ]
So it seemed like the perfect time to honor one of the ocean goddesses from around the world! Mazu is the major Chinese sea goddess who is still revered today by over 100 million devotees, with 1500 temples devoted to her worship.
It's said that she may actually have started out as a real woman, Lin Mo Nian, born to a family of fishermen in the 10th century AD. She was blessed with amazing gifts, Iike being able to predict the weather, and would fall into deep trances and experience divine visions.
In one of those trances, Lin Mo was suddenly transported out to sea where her family had been washed from their boat and were about to drown. She first lifted her brother back to safety, but as she was rescuing her father, her mother awoke her from her trance and he fell back into the sea and drowned. She then jumped off a high cliff in her grief and was transformed in a beam of celestial light where she became Mazu.
Her name (Ma Tsu), means mother. Like Kuan Yin, she is a goddess of compassion, willing to intercede on the behalf of those in distress. But she is also revered for her courage, her willingness to fight for her principles.
So you can call on Mazu when you need protection for ocean voyages, to calm wild weather, but also when you’re seeking reconciliation with family, with nature, and integration of mind, body, and spirit.
Questions for reflection:
What can you do to contribute to the restoration of the oceans?
How can you create mind/body/spirit wholeness every day?
The chant I shared is my favorite water chants –
We all come from the goddess, and to her we shall return.
Like a drop of rain, flowing to the ocean.
