Pakistan has successfully tested an upgraded version of its medium-range ballistic missile.
Pakistan's upgraded Shaheen 1, also known as Haft IV, is a two stage nuclear capable ballistic missile.
The Shaheen 1's rocket motor uses solid fuel, which can be launched on shorter notice than liquid fuel rockets. It has a range of 900 km, putting India's capital within striking distance. However, India's Agni-V missile has an estimated range of 5,000 km, and is also nuclear capable.
Unlike the Shaheen 1, India's Agni-V can be configured to use a single stage for short strikes, or three stages for intercontinental strike capability. The Agni-V is transportable by road or rail, and its solid fuel rockets allow it to be launched on short notice.
The Agni-V is guided in flight by satellite navigation, and terminal guidance of the 10 warhead payload is possible with radar scene correlation.
In April 2012, Pakistan launched its test of the Shaheen 1 in response to India's successful test of the Agni-V a week earlier.
