Six years since the start of the Syrian conflict, life is getting increasingly tough for Syrian refugees in Iraq. More than 4,300 families in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq are hoping to move from substandard low-rent homes in villages and towns, to a UNHCR-supported refugee camp where shelter, education and other services are provided. But most of the camps are full and only limited numbers of the most vulnerable families will be able to make the move.
“Life in exile is very difficult. Back in Kobane, we had friends; childhood friends we grew up with and family we loved. When we came here we knew no one,” he says. “We have to ration everything, we have to cut out many things from our lives to save up to pay rent, and sometimes we even skip meals.”
