Anthony Joshua SENSATIONALLY ADDRESSED Alexander Usyk BEFORE THE REMATCH Tyson Fury - Whyte FIGHT
Britain's heavyweight world champion, 33, said last week he will call it a day after the defence of his WBC title against Dillian Whyte in April.
There are other potential fights out there for Fury, including an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk should Whyte be overcome or an all-British clash against Anthony Joshua, with the 2012 Olympic champion expected to first face the Ukrainian in a rematch for the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO belts.
But with an undefeated record containing 31 wins and a single draw against Deontay Wilder, Fury insists he has little motivation to go on past April 23.
'The only thing I can gain is money,' Fury told BT Sport. 'So after this fight I'll have earned over £100million. If I can spend that, I don't deserve any more, do I?
'I know Mike Tyson spent half a billion and Evander Holyfield 400million and all the rest, but I don't live their big flash lifestyles.
'I live in Morecambe, in Lancashire. It's cheap there. I don't have any big habits like I'm gambling tons of money away. I don't do anything. I can never spend the money I've got.
'I've got stuff I want to do, a lot of opportunities that don't involve me getting brain damage. I've got six kids and a wife. When is enough enough?
'Why do I have to be one of those people who went on too long and got injured? Just had one too many fights and blew it all for what? A few more quid?
'I want to retire on top, unbeaten heavyweight champion of the world. I want to do a Netflix documentary, a Hollywood movie, and be a good husband, father and son.
'Most of all I just want to be happy, and that's probably the hardest thing.'
DISPUTED Dillian Whyte claims he left Tyson Fury ‘sobbing’ after sparring knockdowns, but Gypsy King insists: ‘I used him as a punching bag’
Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte have very differing recollections of their old sparring sessions back in 2012 and 2013.
The rival British heavyweights are set to fight live on talkSPORT on April 23, years after they first shared a ring.
Fury and Whyte have a long-standing rivalry which stems back many years and began as a friendship.
The Gypsy King recruited the Body Snatcher for sparring when they were both young pros.
At the time they got on well, but this relationship has since soured and memories of their sparring sessions vary.
Whyte told talkSPORT.com’s Alex McCarthy back in 2020: “He was getting ready to fight David Haye and his trainer at the time was trying to get him to walk me down and pressure me like he would Haye.
“He was frustrated that day because I kept hitting him, countering him and dropping him.
“I dropped him twice that day. So he was just frustrated and he was sobbing.
“And then his coach cussed him and said, ‘Listen, if that’s what you’re doing here now, David Haye is going to knock you out so get up and get on with it.’”
Now, two years later with the pair set to fight, Fury has given a different version of events.
He told BT Sport: “I’ve sparred Dillian Whyte many, many times.
“And every single time I used him as a punching bag.
“There were times when he couldn’t defend himself and there was a time where we had to stop the sparring and Hughie had to spar him, my cousin Hughie instead.
“Hughie was about 18 at the time and he used to batter him.
“All these stories of him knocking me down 25 times in sparring – highly unlikely anyone believes that rubbish.”
Fury added: “There’s no substance to it, knocking me down umpteen times and all that.
“Just say he did knock me down eight times in sparring, we all know sparring ain’t fighting, is it?
“How many times have you seen people in the gym get absolutely busted up and then on fight night they boxed like Sugar Ray Leonard?
“Sometimes you don’t have good days in the gym, bad days whatever, but sparring ain’t fighting.
“And just for the record, he never knocked me down once. I’ve never been knocked down in a spar, ever.”
