Welcome to a new series: Drug of the Day!
In these #shorts I will be giving a brief overview of commonly prescribed (and over-the-counter) drugs, so that hopefully you could get a better understanding of what they are and what they do!
Episode 1 will focus on Penicillin, which is arguably the most prescribed antibiotic! Penicillin is effective against Gram-positive bacteria, like Streptococcus, which makes it effective at treating Strep throat and Strep-based pneumonia, among other illnesses. Unfortunately, penicillin allergy is fairly common and the fact that it is so commonly prescribed has resulted in penicillin-acquired resistance in certain bacterial strains.
