Why is it important to #renovate buildings?
One answer is their #energy #consumption.
At present, #buildings consume 40% of the EU’s energy. Renovating a building in a way which considers aspects including how it was made, and individual features such as the walls and insulation, can lead to buildings which are more energy #efficient and #sustainable for the changing #climate.
The EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD), looks at renovation as three parts: Energy efficiency, followed by improvement of the insulation, and lastly the incorporation of renewables in the building.
To achieve these steps however, it important to first get a baseline of the buildings’ energy consumption. This can be achieved via energy performance certificates (#EPCs).
Ainhoa Mata, an architect at the Catalan Institute of Energy, discusses the history of #energy efficiency in buildings and how in Spain, building renovation is focused on improving #insulation.
