Kenyan President William Ruto said the "legitimate" protests against a bill to raise taxes were "hijacked by a group of organised criminals". Ruto’s claim came after at least five people were shot dead when police fired on demonstrators trying to storm Kenya's legislature in Nairobi. Protests and clashes also took place in several other cities and towns across Kenya, with many calling for Ruto to quit. Ruto said the protests “mark a critical turning point on how we respond to grave threats to our national security.” On June 18, Kenya's parliament approved a contentious finance bill that aims to raise an additional $2.7 billion in taxes. The bill, as per the government, will lighten the heavy debt load, with interest payments alone consuming 37% of annual revenue. Watch the video to find out more.
