Welcome back to another episode of restoring the 1982 Aircooled VW Vanagon Westfalia. In today's episode, we will be focusing on rebuilding the front suspension. Let's get started!
First, we need to remove the front wheels and jack up the van. Once it's lifted, we'll secure it on jack stands for safety.
Now, we can begin by removing the old suspension components. This includes the control arms, ball joints, tie rods, and shock absorbers. Each piece is carefully detached and set aside for inspection.
Before installing the new suspension parts, we need to clean and refurbish the old ones. This ensures proper fit and prevents any potential issues down the road.
Next, we install the new ball joints, tie rods, and control arms. We meticulously tighten each bolt to the manufacturer's specifications.
Now it's time to add the new shock absorbers. We carefully align them with the mounting points and secure them tightly. This will greatly improve the van's ride and handling.
With everything in place, we can lower the van back down and reattach the front wheels. It's important to torque the lug nuts properly to ensure safety.
Finally, we test the suspension by bouncing the van up and down. It should feel smooth and responsive. If any issues arise, we'll address them accordingly.
And there you have it – the restoration of the front suspension on our 1982 Aircooled VW Vanagon Westfalia is complete! Stay tuned for more episodes as we continue to bring this classic beauty back to life.
