Mt Mitchell is the highest mountain peak east of the Mississippi River and on the East Coast. Mt Mitchell is part of the Black Mountain Range and Blue Ridge Mountains. The Mt Mitchell Trail starts in Pisgah National Forest at the South Toe Trailhead near Black Mountain Campground. The majority of the trail is in Pisgah National Forest with the summit being in Mt Mitchell State Park. This is nearly a 12 mile round trip out and back hike with approximately 3600 of elevation gain.
