Ticks are a type of insect that bite on our skin and feed on blood. Most of the time, ticks move on our skin and bite at different sites, but they are small enough to see them easily. However, in some cases, ticks attach to our body and insert their head into the skin and start sucking blood. Consequently, they grow bigger and become more visible. In such cases, ticks must be removed immediately from the skin or otherwise, they may transfer different diseases like Lyme disease to our body.
Why ticks bite humans?
If we live in grassy lands, we are more likely to carry ticks from grass, especially in the summertime. Ticks need blood to survive or else they may die. Therefore, ticks usually attach to our cloths and once on our skin, they start sucking our blood and become bigger in size.
Causes of tick bites
The tick bite alone does not cause symptoms except rash and a hard red mark at the biting site on the skin. Most symptoms that we feel after a tick bite are associated with the tick-borne diseases. Common infectious agents and diseases that ticks transmit to human include Lyme disease and Rocky mountain spotted fever. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection which may lead to infection of joints and nerves system, whereas rocky mountain spotted fever causes development of rashes on the skin with intense fever and headache.
Treatment
To remove the ticks from skin, tweezers are used which have sharp ends to easily grip over the tick head and loose tick’s hold on the skin. In this way, ticks are removed from the skin and the biting site is washed with soap and warm water. At the end, alcohol is applied to the wound to avoid infection at the biting site.
