Well, I’m really excited to share with you all an extract from the Merchant of Venice play we did 7 years ago at Adani DAV Public School, Mundra.
Backdrop –
This popular speech on humanity originates from the William Shakespeare’s famous play – Merchant of Venice penned by him in 16th-century.
Shylock – who is believed to be one of the greatest Shakespeare’s character as a victim and a villain – has faced lifelong discrimination and unwarranted humiliation for just being a Jew. And when the opportunity knocks the door to take the long-awaited revenge, there is no turning back. This speech unravels his pain for how gravely and heartlessly he was treated for just being a Jew and how much sense did it really make to treat him so.
A perspective to reflect upon –
Where are we standing today? Not this country as a whole, but we as an individual person. Have we been able to move forward with this 16th-century mindset and started accepting/ rejecting a person based on his nature and work rather than the other factors such as religion, cast, creed. sex, etc.? If not, isn’t it high time to do so?
