The port of Algeciras dominates the Bay of Gibraltar and is a busy transit point for North Africa. Most guide books recommend passing through as quickly as possible - but beyond the docks and refineries you'll find a vibrant town centre of typically Andalucian architecture and welcoming street cafes. A visit to the friendly Municipal Museum is the best way to learn about the trials and tribulations that this harbour settlement has both enjoyed and endured throughout the centuries from Phoenician times. For the traveller it's also an affordable and convenient base for day trips to Tarifa, Ceuta and Tangiers. Take a walk through Plaza Alta in the evening before heading to a tapas bar, and dispel any fears that this is a dangerous port city.
