A vapor cone is a visible cloud of vapor that forms around the nose or wingtips of an aircraft when it is flying at high speeds through humid air. This phenomenon is caused by the rapid expansion of air as it flows over the aircraft's surface, causing the air to cool and the moisture in the air to condense into a visible cloud. Vapor cones are often seen around the nose and wingtips of fighter jets when they are performing high-speed manoeuvres, such as turns or acceleration. They can also be seen around the noses of commercial aircraft when they are flying at high altitudes in humid conditions. Vapor cones are not harmful to the aircraft and do not affect its performance, but they can be a useful indicator of the aircraft's speed and airflow.
