Taming complexity of computed tomography scanners by Tobias Blaufuß from Siemens Healthineers

Siemens Healthineers have been developing a set of interacting DSLs to specify certain domains of computed tomography (CT) scanners since 2015. These DSLs enable our primary stakeholders (physicians and system engineers) to define CT scanner models inside our scanner platform. With the help of generators we can use these models to generate configuration files that are continuously integrated into our official CT software. It is also possible to export model data as specifications in the form of a word document, which is necessary to satisfy long-term regulatory documentation requirements in the medical domain. Consistency checks and scoping constraints make sure that our model is consistent and represents a reliable single source of truth. The ultimate goal of our project is to minimize the gap between technical specifications and the resulting code that ends up in our code base. To achieve this, we continuously add new domains to our set of DSLs, though currently there is still a lot of ground to cover. Aside from basic information about our project, there are a lot of other topics that we are eager to covre in our presentation, including CI pipelines, customized RCPs, automatic language plugin updates, and more.
