Rocna Overview
Third season with a Rocna 20kg anchor. Depth is 9 feet with a 4 to1 scope and all 5/8 line. We had been on the hook for over 2 days, and I was checking how many times it had reset as we'd swung full around at least three times.
PROS:
-Sets &re-sets quickly with a short scope in just two or three anchor lengths. This only applies to homogeneous bottoms (all sand, all mud, all gravel, etc.).
-Sharp point penetrates weed and grass ok, not as good as a genuine Bruce, but better than plough or Delta.
-Holding power is excellent, seems like 10 times more than a Bruce, and three times as much my Delta. All anchors similar weights.
-Large hoop on front is great for attaching marker balls etc. And yes, I've pulled it out that way, even though you're not supposed to.
-Shank is similar to Delta Anchor profile, so it fits well in open rollers.
CONS:
-Large hoop snags weeds or sticky mud, sometimes fouling anchor. Area between hoop and rear wings will pack full of mud or large rocks making it a pain to clear and prevent re-setting.
-Made in China now, and manufacturer overstated tensile strength, but offered to refund original purchase. Earlier models made in Canada/NZ and constructed a little bit differently. Main plate is cast iron now instead of bent/forged steel. No issues so far with strength, and galvanizing is fine for freshwater use. No saltwater experience, sorry.
-Large hoop requires an open ended pulpit, will not fill all anchor pulpits, rollers, etc.
-Awkward shape, doesn't store well in a locker or an enclosed space.
-Expensive compared to other options (Delta, Claw, Danforth, etc.)
-Manufacturer tends to over-hype anchors performance, but then doesn't everybody?
Still my favourite (and best) anchor so far. A clear first place when compared to the following:
-DELTA (2nd place) Deltas don't foul nearly as much in weeds or grass, but require longer setting distances and have noticeably less holding power.
-BRUCE or CLAW (distant 3rd) Claws will always find something to grab onto the first time you drop them, but they foul easily with weeds and have pathetic holding power in comparison to the Rocna and Delta. They're extremely popular for some reason on Georgian Bay, and I have yet to figure out why. I sold mine after getting the Rocna. My backups are Deltas (as they store more compactly in my locker).
The Rocna is an excellent purchase. I'm a bit miffed that it costs a ton of money in Canada, being that the brand is now owned by a Canadian company. It's still cheapest in the USA.
My next purchase is going to be a Mantus which I can disassemble and only put together for vacation gunk-holing. They're also much cheaper, at around 30% less than Rocna. So we'll see.
