After several years of research on attempting to locate a forgotten red ore mine we were finally able to locate a very remote well overgrown entrance down into the mine. The earliest mining took place near the crest of the mountain that involved open ore mining. later years saw large drift mines and finally a slope mine was built in the early 1890's. The mine stayed in operation until around 1900 before being abandoned.
Upon making entrance it did not really surprise us to come across the remains of moonshine operations from long ago. Moonshiners made great use of locating abandoned mines in remote areas to ply their whiskey trade.
