At least 121 people, most of them women and children, died in a stampede at a religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district on July 2, in one of the worst such tragedies in recent years. Around 250,000 people gathered despite permission being given for only 80,000, according to the police first information report (FIR). At the centre of the stampede disaster is a police constable-turned-preacher Suraj Pal Singh, who later changed his name to Narayan Sakar Hari, now known as Bhole Baba, who has built an immense following among poor and marginalised Indians.
Watch this video to know more about the self-styled godman Bhole Baba and India’s long history of of deadly stampedes at religious gatherings mostly managed privately, and often without adequate safety or crowd control measures.
