A cholera crisis has hit Zambia. More than 400 people have died, with over 10,000 more infected since October.
Cholera is an acute infection that causes diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration. It’s linked to inadequate access to clean water. Cholera’s easily treatable, but can be fatal within hours if not treated quickly.
Currently, Zambia is seeing over 400 new cases of cholera a day. The Zambian government, with international support, is taking action to get things back under control.
Schools are closed to halt the spread.
A soccer stadium has transformed into a treatment centre.
2.4 million litres of clean water are provided each day to affected communities.
And a major vaccination drive is underway, aiming to vaccinate 1.7 million people to help turn the tide of this deadly outbreak.
