June 2023 marks the 81st anniversary of one of America’s most historically significant naval victories. U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Edgar R. Fox defended Midway during the June 4-7, 1942 attack. He retired as a sergeant first class in 1966. On Jan. 7, 2023, Sgt. Fox celebrated his 100th birthday.
In this oral history interview, Sgt. Edgar Fox describes his time on Midway Atoll during World War II, the Battle of Midway, and how the Marine Corps veteran came to celebrate several anniversaries of the battle at what is now a national wildlife refuge and a national memorial. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is humbled to share Sgt. Fox’s experiences in his own words with this and future generations.
