A birds-eye view of a mug being thrown. This isn’t quite the view I have as they’re made, my head sits a little further back and I actually spend most of the time watching the mug being thrown into life via the mirror that sits just in front of me, (on the tabletop opposite my wheel, you can see it here with some tools placed there).

To set the throwing gauge’s pointer, which you can see jutting in from the left, I first throw a mug and measure it with a ruler. Once correct I set the rubber pointer, which can thankfully be flicked up and down, to reside right next to rim of the pot, not touching, but hovering just next to it. Thereafter, all the mugs are simply thrown to this physical point in space and I find it extraordinarily helpful to have that physical point, as it gives me a target to draw the clay up to.

Lastly, with the rim set and smoothed over with a chamois leather, I drag a twisted metal wire underneath the mug, scrape the slip off my hands, and lift it away. One down, forty-nine to go.
