After a nearly two-year closure, Australia reopened its international borders to fully vaccinated visa holders on February 21, 2022. But unvaccinated travellers still need to apply for a travel exemption and must pay for their own hotel quarantine. Travellers were greeted with items representing Australia, such as koala toys, Tim Tam chocolate biscuits and jars of Vegemite spread. Hundreds of people have subsequently been able to reunite with family and friends. In a move that seeks to coexist with the virus, the border reopening is expected to revive tourism, one of Australia’s largest industries that has been hit hard since the closure of international borders in March 2020.
