Hiccups often don’t have any clear cause. Some people find they are triggered by stress, eating and drinking, or strong emotions 😱
To stop them, there are lots of tips that work for some people and not for others.
Things that have worked for some people:
✅ Sipping ice-cold water
✅ Swallowing some sugar
✅ Holding your breath for a short time
✅ Breathing into a paper bag (without putting it over your head!)
✅ Biting a lemon
Things to avoid:
❌ Don’t drink fizzy or alcoholic drinks
❌ Don’t eat food too fast
❌ Don’t smoke
❌ Don’t eat food that is very spicy
❌ Don’t eat something very cold after something very hot
If your hiccups last longer than 48 hours, or come back so often that they’re affecting your life then make sure you see your doctor who can figure out if they’re due to a medical condition or a medicine you’re taking!
If there is no disease or medication causing your hiccups, then there are medicines available to treat hiccups.
