Which Is The Best? The Nairobi Expressway OR The Kampala Expressway
Both Kenya and Uganda have constructed expressways to ease traffic congestion in their respective capital cities.
In each country, the expressways have different costs, different styles of construction, and different lengths.
Let's start with Uganda. The Kampala-Entebbe expressway is 51 kilometres in length.
The expressway connects the Northern Bypass at Busega in Kampala to the country's busiest airport, Entebbe International Airport.
It was constructed at a total cost of $476 million, with the Ugandan government providing up to $126 million, while the remaining $350 million was funded by the China Exim Bank through a preferential buyer credit loan agreement.
The construction began in July 2012, and the road was opened to traffic in June 2018.
The expressway has two lanes in each direction and comprises two road sections: a 36.94 km-long section and a 12.68 km-long link road.
The speed limit ranges between 50 km/h and 100 km/h.
The toll road has four interchanges and also features 19 overbridges and 18 underpasses to provide access to the area around the road.
It has two suspension bridges, measuring 200m and 500m in length and boasts a 75 m-long bridge at Kajjansi and a 1.45 m-long suspension bridge over the Nambigirwa swamp.
Motorists pay between 1.4 dollars and 5 dollars depending on the size of their vehicles.
Now let's go to Kenya. The Nairobi Expressway is 27 kilometres in length.
It's a 27-kilometre toll road connecting Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Nairobi's Westlands.
Its construction was financed and built by China Road and Bridge Corporation under a public-private partnership model at 648 million dollars.
The Chinese firm will recoup its investment by charging toll fees for 27 years before transferring ownership to the Kenyan government.
Its construction started in mid-October 2019 and was officially opened on July 20, 2022.
It's a class A highway designed for speeds of 80 km/h.
The Nairobi Expressway is a four-lane dual-carriageway that expands to six lanes between the Eastern and Southern bypasses.
It also consists of a total of 11 interchanges, 5-foot bridges, and 20 ramp bridges.
There are 15 entrances and 14 exit points to provide motorists with convenient transitions to various destinations across Nairobi city.
Users pay between 1 dollar and 11 USD depending on the class of their vehicles.
