Crocodiles are frequently referred to as "living fossils" because they resemble what they did millions of years ago. Crocodiles initially appeared some 240 million years ago, during the Triassic epoch. Crocodiles existed before dinosaurs but belonged to the same crown group, Archosaurs. Crocodiles, birds, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs were all part of this group.
