Born into slavery in Mecca around 580 AD, Bilal ibn Rabah is known for being the first Muezzin in history, the person who recites the Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer. Bilal was of African descent; his mother hailed from Abyssinia, modern-day Ethiopia. Bilal went on to become a trusted companion of the Prophet Muhammad and as such the Prophet chose him as the first Muezzin, the person who conducts the daily call to prayer.
