These are much like the rubber for tattler lids or harvest guard. Please don't judge. I am very frugal and on a budget but I also use common sense to work out my own solutions without having to fork over a ridiculous amount of money for something that I can make myself. Lids were around 32 cents each and I don't even know what they are now. & why throw them out? Unless they are really bent or rusty, use discernment.
Have you been affected by the canning lid shortage? I wasn't too much bc I reuse my lids, with no problem. Yes, the rubber attached to the metal lid is what gives out and gets indented to the point it cannot create a good seal. I tried an experiment making my own silicone gaskets, similar to the rubber ones you can buy with the expensive tattler lids or harvest guard. I used a food-grade silicone cutting mat. I also used a different type of silicone canning gasket that I just cut to the size I needed. I am so happy that this ended up working after a bit of trial and error. I hope that this gives you some ideas and resourceful tips for when you need to pressure can but maybe can't find the supplies you need with the canning lid shortage.
