Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien arrived in Moscow on Saturday for an official five-day visit.
Before leaving Canada, he said his goal for the trip was to persuade President Boris Yeltsin to sign an international treaty banning anti-personnel landmines.
Jean Chretien's plane landed at Moscow's Vnukovo-2 international airport.
During his visit, the premier is scheduled to meet President Boris Yeltsin, Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and other top officials.
He will be in Moscow until Tuesday, when he goes to St. Petersburg for two days.
Before Chretien left, he stated one of his aims was to firm up Yeltsin's approval for the ban on landmines, which is scheduled for formal ratification in Ottawa in December.
At a recent Council of Europe summit, Yeltsin voiced support for the ban, but did not say when he would sign it.
Deputy Prime Minister Valery Serov is quoted as saying talks are expected to focus on improvements in bilateral trade, especially in the area of high technology.
