Alcohol Awareness Week is organised by Alcohol Change UK and gives businesses, charities, local authorities and GP surgeries an opportunity to think and talk about alcohol harm within their communities.
This years’ theme is focussed on exploring the relationship between alcohol and cost.
UK household expenditure on alcohol hit £27.1 billion in 2020,
The equivalent of £386 per person not accounting for purchases made outside the home such as in pubs bars or restaurants.
Alcohol related admissions also contribute to significant pressure on the National Health Service.
Throughout 2021 there were almost 980k admissions where the primary reason for admission or secondary diagnosis was linked to alcohol
Representing 5.7% of all hospital admissions in england.
In addition Alcohol was directly responsible for 9641 deaths in 2021, Which is a 27.4% increase since 2019.
The ramifications of alcohol misuse is far reaching,
It affects us socially, in the workplace and is a risk factor for mental ill health.
All of which i’m going to break down in this video as we observe alcohol awareness week 2023.
