Crack In Ignition Coil Leads To Engine Misfiring
We had this 2012 Fiat Linea visit one of our MotoFyx car repair workshop, for an annual service along with a concern relating misfiring of the engine. As the car was sparingly used over the past few months, the car owner wanted to get the car completely serviced and also resolve the misfiring concern which had further led to the car being unstable while idling and the RPM constantly fluctuating.
Upon a detailed inspection of the car by our expert technicians, there was misfiring observed from one of the cylinders resulting in drastic power loss. Upon further inspection of the ignition coils, coil one was found to be short and had developed cracks in the process, in addition all the four spark plugs were also found to be in a worn out state, requiring replacement.
*How does an ignition coil short?
- When the spark plug wire is open or has excessive resistance, the ignition coil’s output voltage could rise to the point where it burns through the coils internal insulation causing a short.
- Internal arcing or shorts in a coil can overload and damage the circuitry inside the ignition module
*Function of the ignition coil:
- The ignition coil acts like a transformer, by means of two coils one inside the other, the ignition coil transforms the electrical energy from the car’s battery into high voltage, saves it briefly and then emits high voltage current pulse onto the spark plugs
*Symptoms of faulty ignition coil:
- Engine malfunction light
- Engine misfiring
- Poor fuel economy
- Engine Surging
*Solution:
- All 4 worn out spark plugs along with the faulty ignition coil were replaced with new parts
