A video series explaining how to design a shoot 'em up from the ground up. Even though it focuses on CAVE-style games, most things should be transferable to just about any style.
The goal is to give a rundown of genre conventions, if you want to make something non-conventional then this can be used as a jumping off point, a "know which rules you're breaking and why they're there" type of deal.
This vid's about the big topic of level design. It builds on everything I've covered so far and goes over a ton of facets of design, although not very deeply. This should apply to the vast majority of vertical shmup styles, however it won't apply to most terrain-based horizontal shooters.
