An innovative new project will see music play to drivers who drive within the speed limit along a 300-meter stretch of asphalt road in Beijing's south-western Fengtai district.
Designers have made rumble strips on the road that help cause car tires to play the music from "Ode to the Motherland", as long as drivers follow the speed limit of 40 kmh.
"We have small grooves built into the road surface, positioned apart with different sizes of gap according to the melody of the song. These 'rumble strips' cause the car tires to play music and then make a singing road," said Lin Zhong, general manager of Beijing Luxin Dacheng landscape architecture company.
The novel idea also aims to raise awareness about driving safely.
"Our first idea is to get cars moving at a constant speed. Because only in that way can you enjoy good musical effect. We use it as a reminder of speed limit," added Lin.
The 'singing' road has now in its final-stage trials and is set to open to the public next spring.
The road, located in the Qianlingshan Mountain scenic area, has been rebuilt from a deserted road. Local authorities hope the project will bring a unique experience to visitors and thus help boost local tourism.
