Jason Kao Hwang/Critical Response features Anders Nilsson - electric guitar, Michael T.A. Thompson - drums, and Jason Kao Hwang - composer/electric violin.
“The Power of Many in the Soul of One” was inspired by and dedicated to Joshua Wong and the pro-Democracy movement in Hong Kong. He is currently in prison due to illegal assembly convictions, including a vigil commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. The music was composed for and performed by my Critical Response Trio, which features Anders Nilsson (electric guitar), Michael T.A. Thompson (drum set) and myself (composer/electric violin.) The music employs the synergy of scored notation and improvisation. The electric violin and guitar are processed through a chain of effects, specifically programmed to create the emotional life and language of this music, which is a story told through multiple chapters and transformations.
This performance was for the Infrequent Seams Festival, streamed live from Scholes Street Studio in Brooklyn, NY on June 18, 2021.
