While it’s a normal stage in women’s lives, the symptoms of menopause are infrequently talked about and often not taken seriously by the medical profession.
It’s estimated that around a quarter of women will experience serious symptoms like anxiety, depression, debilitating sweats and migraines.
Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, when the ovaries run out of eggs and menstruation stops.
It technically starts when you have gone 12 months without a period.
But the wind down — or perimenopause — can begin years earlier, as oestrogen and progesterone production fluctuates wildly.
And, one of the few published studies of Indigenous health found the process could begin five years earlier for First Nations women.
