Long after other combat wounds heal, seizures continue to impact many American combat veterans with epilepsy. Over 40% of combat troops who suffer severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) will subsequently develop post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) and may experience symptoms such as confusion, memory loss, and depression.
Dr. Jordan Grafman discusses what causes individuals to acquire epilepsy after TBI, how to potentially prevent PTE, and the state of PTE research. Dr. Grafman is a Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Northwestern University and Director of Brain Injury Research at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
