The Mahama administration is set to offer a progressively free SHS education by the 2015/2016 academic year. Mr Mahama made the announcement in a state of the nation address to the country's law making body. The mention of the progressively free SHS education attracted loud cheers from the majority but drew jeers from the minority. Free SHS was the main campaign theme of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo- the NPP presidential candidate in the 2012 presidential election. President Mahama responded to that message during the campaign saying an NDC government would build 200 community-based day senior high schools and improve access to secondary education.
