A CV-22B Osprey of the 7th Special Operation Squadron from RAF Mildenhall enters the range carrying 300 rounds of .50 Cal bullets with calling 'KNIFE72'. Our Squadron Leader also had his targets locked on target 9 at the range using a 1200mm (600mm in mft) and you are going to love what he captured!
The remote Holbeach AWR opened in 1926 as an air gunnery range attached to and established by Royal Air Force Practice Camp Sutton Bridge (later named RAF Sutton Bridge). Use of the range began on 27 September 1926, with biplanes firing and dropping bombs over the area formally known as "Holbeach Air Gunnery and Bombing Range" and colloquially simply as Holbeach Marsh Range.
Holbeach AWR was originally associated with RAF Sutton Bridge, but in the 1950s was named Royal Air Force Holbeach before adopting its current name in the mid 2000s when control was passed to the Defence Training Estate.
Today it is known at Holbeach Air Weapons Range and since 1926, aircraft have been coming here to blow up and shoot stuff.
The 7th Special Operations Squadron is an active flying unit of the United States Air Force. It is a component of the 752d Special Operations Group (752 SOG), United States Special Operations Command, and is currently based at Royal Air Force Station Mildenhall in Suffolk, UK. From their base at RAF Mildenhall, the 7th Special Operations Squadron is able to deploy or extract troops from hostile, sensitive, or otherwise undesirable locations.
The squadron flies the CV-22 Osprey. Their mission is to provide long-range infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of non-conventional special operation forces. The CV-22 is fitted with advanced electronic warfare systems, terrain following and avoidance radars, and navigation systems allowing them to operate under almost any adverse weather or time condition, to maximum efficiency.
