This video captures my carving process, creating this futuristic semi-abstract cityscape. PART ONE: sketching and carving
For this composition I wanted to play with the juxtaposition of old versus new, and familiar with unfamiliar. I created this paradigm by combining traditional relief printmaking with artificial intelligence to create a vaguely familiar but imagined cityscape in a variety of colors and visual textures.
I started this process by prompting artificial intelligence software to render conceptual cityscape imagery. From there, I photoshopped illustrative elements of iconic structures and familiar landscapes into the scene. At first glance, one might see Chicago, Austin, Miami, New York, or Dubai… but upon closer inspection realizes this cityscape is a mélange figure of mine and digital software’s collective imaginations.
From there I sketched, carved, inked, and pulled prints by hand in traditional printmaking using MDF board and oil-based ink. I leveraged a variety of colors and types of paper to capture the allusiveness of the scene. Some colors pulsate with energy, some fade and vary to amplify mystery, and some project a dated and gritty feel to play with the fleeting sense of time and familiarity as intended.
