Now-retired Air Force Col. Harry Kieling – who narrowly missed being on the E-3B Sentry AWACS plane that crashed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1995 – is no stranger to aviation close-calls.
Kieling, who flew A-10 Warthog attack planes before his stint with AWACS planes, earned his call-sign "Iceman" in 1991 when he had to land a Warthog on its belly after a malfunction in the jet's gun blew apart the front landing gear.
Kieling has shared his story and the historical video footage of the malfunction and subsequent gear-up landing at Eielson Air Force Base in June 1991.
