What is PPE? How to don and remove PPE in the correct order?
PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment and it is designed to be worn to minimize exposure to hazards that can cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. A good example of the PPE equipment usage is in the health workforce where health workers take comprehensive donning and doffing training to keep themselves safe and stop the spread of COVID-19. This includes using protective equipment like surgical masks, filter respirators, gloves, goggles, glasses, face shields, gowns and aprons.

PPE Donning Procedure
1. Begin by washing your hands before donning the isolation gown.
2. Make sure the gown size fits your body and all clothing is covered
3. Put on a NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher. Use a facemask if a respirator is not available.
4. Place the top strap on the crown of the head and the bottom strap at the back of the neck.
5. Avoid touching the mask and check the user seal to make sure there is no air escaping.
6. Select the proper eye protection such as face shield or goggles, and make sure they are positioned correctly for eye protection. It should not affect the seal of the respirator.
7. Put on gloves and make sure they cover the cuff of the gown and no skin is exposed.
PPE Doffing Procedure
1. Slowly remove the PPE in a sequence to prevent self-contamination.
2. Remove gloves using glove-in-glove or bird beak technique to ensure no additional hand contaminations. Perform hand hygiene.
3. When removing the gown, reach up carefully to the shoulders and pull the gown down and away from the body.
4. After removing the gown, always perform hand hygiene.
5. Remove the face shield, goggles, respirators or masks by pulling it forward and avoid touching the front.
6. Perform hand hygiene again
