The United States and five Arab countries have begun launching major airstrikes in Syria. The bombings are aimed at stopping ISIS and other terrorist groups.
All local congressional leaders agree ISIS must be stopped.
"I think that the airstrikes are very important we've seen them effective in other ways," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota.
The missiles were aimed at the city of Raqqa, in northern Syria. This is also where one American and one British hostage were executed by ISIS.
U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Third District, has not released yet a statement on the airstrikes. However last week he voted yes on an amendment to equip and train elements of Syrian opposition to fight ISIS.
ISIS has drawn recruits from all over the world, including at least two from the northwest metro. According to the U.S. State Department, Douglas McCain, a native of New Hope, was killed in August, while fighting alongside ISIS. Troy Kastigar died in 2009 while fighting for al–Shabab, a Somali terrorist group. Both Kastigar and McCain attended Cooper High School and were close friends.
"My message to young people, who might get caught up in some kind of romantic notion that these people are about something, the only thing you're going to get by associating with them is death," said U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Fifth District.
"We cannot let an evil organization like this, that's recruiting the world over, to keep going and that's why the airstrikes are the right way to go," said Klobuchar.
