Youth in Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council in Kasese district have come to testify that ever since the fish market was brought back from the other side of DRC, They have been making money at this border town through providing various services such as loading and offloading, transport and vending of fish among others. They say that this has greatly impacted their income and hence the well-being of their families.
According to Mikidadi Mumbere, many youths are now busy with work and they don’t have time to get involved in dubious activities that may ruin their lives.
Jofura Kikundi - head of offloading teams says that everyone is happy about the shift of the fish market back to Uganda, he therefore thanked the government for its tireless efforts in making sure that the fish market gets back to Uganda.
Other market vendors also express their insights and joy about how businesses have started booming at the border due to the presence of the fish market at Mpondwe.
Various trucks are seen offloading fish something Mr Mugish Moses the town clerk - Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council says the market is busy and revenue has started to increase.
He also noted that Congolese have started coming to buy fish and other commodities like it was before the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when the market was shifted to DRC. This largely affected revenue collections at the border which fell from over 600 million to 50 million per month.
Col.Mercy Tukahirwa – commander of the UPDF fisheries protection unit said it was important for relocation of the fish market back to Uganda.
