The Associated Press explains who the Houthi rebels in Yemen are and why are they attacking Red Sea ships.
The Associated Press News Director for the Persian Gulf and Iran Jon Gambrell explains that the Houthis have held the Yemeni capital of Sanaa since 2014.
The group has "been battling a Saudi-led coalition there," Gambrell, adding that the "Houthis have received both support and weaponry from Iran as that war has gone on."
The rebels have recently been targeting ships in the Red Sea.
The Houthis, who have been engaged in a civil war with Yemen’s internationally recognized government since 2014, have said they launched the attacks on ships in the Red Sea with the aim of ending Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip triggered by the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ Oct. 7 surprise attack in southern Israel.
