New Zealand's Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of the 10 Great Walks, is a three- to four-day trek in Tongariro National Park. The hike includes one of the most famous day hikes in all of New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a day's march that journeys across some of the Northern Circuit's most stunning scenery. The complete trail forms a 43.1 kilometer loop that circumnavigates Mount Ngauruhoe, which is known in pop culture as the iconic Mount Doom from the "Lord of the Rings" movies.
