HAPPY CLOUD by Stuart Semple (2009)
At the height of the UK recession contemporary British artist Stuart Semple decided to spread some happiness over the city of London.
In a guerilla art performance he took to Tate Modern on the Southbank to flood the city skyline with thousands of smiley faced clouds.
The intention was simply to lift the spirits of Londoners, spread happiness and show that art had something positive to contribute to the situation.
The happy clouds made their way from the Tate towards the financial district, symbolizing art’s ability to lift the spirit.
Since then the performance has gone on to become synonymous with a global happiness movement.
Stuart Semple received a happiness hero medal on the first UN Internatinal Day of Happiness for the artwork.
