This is how I transplant the leek plants into their growing positions on the allotment.
I grew these in the polytunnel from a March planting.
Variety is Musselburgh , an old favourite.
Once the plants are about 9" to a foot tall they are about ready to go out.
I make 6 inch deep holes using a dibber and then place one leek plant into each hole.
The reason for planting into a hole is because the stem needs to be excluded from daylight in order for it to become white or "Blanched" otherwise it will be green and bitter if exposed to sunlight.
After planting fill the hole with water so that some soil is washed onto the roots but don't fill the hole with soil, this will get soil between the leaves and mean that you'll get gritty leeks when you harvest.
As the leeks grow the shaft will fill the hole and you'll end up with a perfectly white blanched leek shaft which is the depth of the hole you planted it into.
That's how I do it anyway.
Cheers.
