In this video, Dr. Ike Ahmed demonstrates how optical innovations help to improve ophthalmic surgeries. The surgical footage includes the use of an OttoFlex diameter for a pediatric cataract surgery, the demonstration of a wide-angle beam system for a vitreous incarceration and the advantages of a motorized tilting mechanism in angle surgery. In addition, Dr. Ahmed talks about his experience with 3D heads-up surgery, using a stereoscopic high-definition visualization system for cataract, glaucoma, and retinal surgeries.
Being at the leading edge of innovative treatments for cataract surgery, Dr. Ahmed was one of the first ophthalmologists to work with 3D heads-up visualization using a Leica M822 ophthalmic microscope. His focus lies on the development of advanced microsurgical techniques in glaucoma surgery and complicated cataract extraction, and he is actively involved in research and medical education at a national and international level. He has received research grants to study glaucoma medications, glaucoma laser and surgical devices/techniques, angle closure glaucoma, anterior segment and retinal/optic nerve imaging in glaucoma, cataract surgical techniques and devices, and intraocular lens designs. Dr. Ahmed has designed innovative glaucoma diamond scalpels for surgery, microsurgical instrumentation, and devices, implants, and techniques for the management of the dislocated cataract, iris reconstruction, and glaucoma implant devices.
Dr. Ike Ahmed is Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Utah, Fellowship Director, Glaucoma & Anterior Segment Surgery (GAASS) Fellowship at the University of Toronto and Research Fellowship Director at the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences. He is a fellowship-trained glaucoma, cataract, and anterior segment surgeon with a practice focus on the surgical management of glaucoma, complex cataract and intraocular lens complications. He is board certified in ophthalmology in Canada and the USA.
