A Riverside police lieutenant was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving on Sunday, Feb. 3, in an incident that bore similarities to one three years ago involving then-Police Chief Russ Leach — though police say they handled things properly this time.
Lt. Larry Gonzalez, 44, is accused of driving an unmarked police vehicle into a mailbox and retaining wall about 2 a.m. in the 6700 block of Rycroft Drive in Riverside's Canyon Crest area. Gonzalez, a 20-year veteran of the force, is a watch commander.
Leach also crashed while driving a city-issued vehicle on a Super Bowl weekend. Police drove Gonzalez home, just as they did in the Leach case.
