German eVTOL company Volocopter says they plan to offer taxi service in Singapore by 2024
We've all heard for years about how close flying taxis could be, and we even covered the BMW-backed AirCar that was nearing production late last year. But now, another company has entered into a deal that could see real flying taxis taking to the skies of Singapore by 2024.
This news comes from the German company Volocopter. It's been making progress on all kinds of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology for the past few years, and it's so confident in this upcoming taxi service that it's already started selling tickets.
Still, today's news should come with measured excitement because this is just a memorandum of understanding, which means there are a lot of details that need to be ironed out before flights begin.
First, Volocopter is still trying to figure out where production of its air taxi VoloCity will take place. Once the details are finalized, Volocopter hopes to be a key part of Seletar Aerospace Park, which is being built as Singapore's aviation hub.
The park plans to have multiple support facilities, including a vertiport terminal, airside facilities and others to support research and development. If completed with a functional air taxi service, it would be a big step forward for the air taxi segment.
Christian Bauer, Volocopter CCO, commented on the agreement: "This MoU represents a concrete step towards our commercial launch in Singapore. We are grateful to our forward-thinking partners. Manufacturing and MRO (production and maintenance, repair and overhaul) in Singapore." "Having the facilities, combined with collaboration between industry partners, government agencies and regulators, will strengthen Singapore's position as a top aviation hub and AAM industry leader in the region."
Singapore has made a name for itself in technology, and this step seems to be exactly what the state wants. Volocopter, however, is not content to proceed with this plan. They are also working to bring a drone delivery service to Chengdu, China, and more flying taxi services to Japan and South Korea in the near future.
Will it be Volocopter or another brand that will take flying taxis to the skies again? Only time will tell.
