Christie’s auction house in New York sold the most expensive piece of art from the 20th century, which also became the US artist, Andy Warhol’s most expensive work ever sold at an auction.
The art piece was an iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe – a 1964 silkscreen image of Monroe in a vibrant close up with the iconic actress in yellow hair blue eyeshadow and red lips on top of a rich blue background.
The portrait was sold for a big $195 million, surpassing the previous record holder, also by a modern master – Jean-Michel Basquiat whose 1982 painting “Untitled” was sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s in 2017, which was a painting of a skull-like face.
The buyer of the Monroe painting remains anonymous as per Christie’s
The proceeds of the sale were to go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich which originally put up the Monroe silkscreen portrait for auction.
Many more Monroe paintings by Warhol exists, but this painting in particular has been exhibited at museums around the world.
