My friend and fellow Bible-movie enthusiast Matt Page lives in the UK, so he had a chance to see The Book of Clarence when it premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October. I've been following the news about this film since director Jeymes Samuel started talking about it a year and a half ago, so I figured I'd ask Matt for some details about the film.
We also talked about how the film fits into the history of Bible films in general, and how it compares to other films that have dealt with racial representation in biblical stories, from 1936's The Green Pastures to 1973's Jesus Christ Superstar and beyond.
The Book of Clarence comes to theatres January 12, 2024.
